Nuestra Señora del Rosario patron saint's day fiesta

View of Luarca shrine, Asturias

The maritime tradition of this village is at the heart of these festivities.

The most moving moment of the fiestas in this village in Asturias is the Saleo (maritime procession) of the Virgen del Rosario. The statue of the Virgin Mary is taken out to sea in a boat, accompanied by a fleet of other vessels that sound their horns in festive manner along the way. A wreath is then thrown into the water in memory of all sailors lost at sea. Also outstanding are the typical habaneras (songs), and the traditional bonfire lit on the night before the celebration.
