Nuestra Señora del Rosario patron saint's day fiesta

Temple of San Sebastian, Agüimes, Gran Canaria

The happy commemoration of an ancient tradition.

This fiesta, in the town of Agüimes, Gran Canaria, attracts many visitors year after year, calling to mind one of the oldest traditions of the Canary Islands. It is the “bringing of water and corn meal”, and is a joyful celebration that represents the old tradition of carrying corn, barley or wheat to the mill in order to obtain meal, a staple of the Canary Islands diet. On this day, people make their way to the mills, giving out meal to those in attendance on the way and dancing to music. Later on, the participants head back to town and, on arrival, people spray water down on them from their balconies.
