Sport and folklore come together at this unique event.

In August, Navia, a coastal village in Asturias, holds its Estuary Swim, a prestigious international event which attracts swimmers from all over the world, but especially from Europe. The competition was held for the first time in 1958, and is usually in the first fortnight of August, coinciding with the fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Barca and San Roque.New swimming events have grown up around the Estuary Swim, such as the “Criterium de los Ases”, the “MiniDescenso” (a shorter version) and the Asturias Cup for Long-distance Swimming, also held at the same time. The presence of folk groups from Spain and abroad, along with concerts, carriage parades, cider tasting, a floral offering to the Virgen de la Barca and a huge people’s lunch, amongst other events, go to round off the festivities centring on the Navia Estuary Swim.
