Easter Week in Tobarra

Tobarra, Albacete

Easter week in Tobarra, province of Albacete, is characterised by the ceaseless beating of drums. They start on Easter Wednesday and do not stop until Easter Sunday.

These drum rolls can be heard in the village for 104 hours, not only during the processions, but all day long. The most sublime moment of the Tobarra celebrations comes on Good Friday, with a blessing given by a moving statue of the crucified Christ to thousands of people. This is the moment when the drums stop beating. Following this, the “Mektub” can be heard, an intense, funereal piece played in accompaniment to this important act of Easter week in Tobarra.Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. This commemoration has centuries of history and tradition, remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of the majority of Spain's cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ's death. Music, art and colour come together in magical processions - solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the streets.
