Easter Week in Sagunto

The pinnacle of the Easter week celebrations in Sagunto, Valencia, comes on Good Friday, with the Stations of the Cross that set out from La Sangre Shrine, heading for Calvary.

The route follows a steep path, representing the Passion of Christ. The act attracts crowds of people and the sound of drums, prayers and songs, known as “motets”, can be heard. That same evening, the Santo Entierro procession takes place, a popular manifestation of religious fervour. In this procession, children ask the participants for sweets (“caramelet”), while some brotherhoods, known as “plegaors”, ask for donations, accompanied by the sound of drums and cornets. During Easter week there is also a theatrical representation of the passion and death of Christ in Sagunto, played out by a group of amateur actors.Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. This commemoration has centuries of history and tradition, remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of the majority of Spain's cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ's death. Music, art and colour come together in magical processions - solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the streets.
