Easter Week in Palencia

Easter week procession in Palencia

Palencia has been holding its Easter week celebrations since the 15th century. They are characterised by the faith, silence and religious fervour that can be seen on the streets at this time of year.

Austerity and solemnity accompany all the processions, where you can see images and statues with centuries of history. On Tuesday and Wednesday night the traditional “llamada de los hermanos” (call of the brothers) takes place: local residents are called to take part in the processions with the sound of cornets and knocking on the doors. The sound of the “tararú” is characteristic of Easter week in Palencia and accompanies the processions: the stops and starts of the procession are identified by the sound of cornets and a children’s choir – a real spectacle. The Rompimiento del Velo procession is the final act in this city’s Easter week celebrations. Rockets fly, bells peal, and bread, almonds and lemonade are handed out to announce the Resurrection of Christ.Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. This commemoration has centuries of history and tradition, remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of the majority of Spain's cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ's death. Music, art and colour come together in magical processions - solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the streets.
