Easter Week in Jumilla

View of Jumilla by night, Murcia

The Easter week celebrations in Jumilla, Murcia, are almost 600 years old.

This is the most important fiesta on the town calendar. It is outstanding for its colour, artistic wealth and for the enthusiasm of the local people. Apart from the numerous processions to be seen in the streets, there are other noteworthy events such as the public enactment of the Arrest of Christ, a theatrical piece that dates back to the 19th century, held on Easter Wednesday in Plaza de Arriba Square. The speeches and carrying of thrones and religious images are other special moments in these Easter celebrations, which come to an end on the last day with a mass “caramelada”, where participants and spectators are bombarded with sweets.Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. This commemoration has centuries of history and tradition, remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of the majority of Spain's cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ's death. Music, art and colour come together in magical processions - solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the streets.
