Easter Week ofBaena (Córdoba)

Religion, colour and drums

The Baena Easter week celebrations are the most important fiesta in the town (Cordoba province). Although it is a religious fiesta, the town is filled with noise and colour for a few days, to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. Among the numerous traditional functions and processions, we should make special mention of the “Judio de Baena” (the Baena Jew). These characters play their drums ceaselessly throughout the procession, dressed in a particularly striking costume (red jacket, gold helmet and black or white plumes). Another of the gems of this fiesta is the presence of beautiful religious statues in the processions, such as the Gothic “El Perdón” Christ and the “Cristo de la Expiración”, which has received the Cultural Property designation.
