Asturcón Horse Festival

Reservoir on the Río Seco river, Asturias

This is a celebration of the Asturcón horse, the quintessential breed throughout this region of Asturias . The festival was started in 1980 when these horses were facing extinction. It takes place in the town of Sardeda.

The festivities begin in the morning with an open-air mass, and continue throughout the day with a dance competition, brass bands, bagpipe bands and a communal meal laid on by a local social club. Then there is a display of riding and dressage, which includes marking all Asturcón colts born that year.
