Parade during Americas Day in Asturias

The Asturias America Day parade takes place as part of the San Mateo fiestas in Oviedo .

This great parade started as a tribute to the many Asturian emigrants to America who used to come back to visit Asturias in the summer. Close to 2,000 people take part in this colourful parade with floats, folk groups and bands, with representation from Latin American countries, some countries in Europe, and from towns and villages in the region. Diplomats, politicians and personalities habitually attend the festivities, which get underway with the traditional parade of “haigas”, the old name for the huge American cars that emigrants brought back with them.
